Facebook is testing a new Material Design overhaul for its Android app

 

Facebook users on Android look set to get a redesigned app with fancy new visuals based on Google’s Material Design guidelines for Lollipop. Screenshots of the overhaul have been posted online ahead of its full public rollout.

The new Facebook app doesn’t look vastly different to the existing one, but one obvious change is the addition of the floating action button, much like that in Inbox and other Google apps. It sits in the bottom right corner and provides shortcuts to write a new post, to take or upload a photo, and to check-in with your location.

Not only does the app look better, but it’s also going to make the app easier to use for Lollipop users who are now becoming accustomed to that floating action button.
These screenshots were uploaded to Twitter by @AhmadiehTarek, who is one of the lucky few testing the new design. Unfortunately, the changes appear to be happening on the server side, so there is no beta build you can download to get the new look early.

We don’t yet have a release date for the redesign, either. Presuming there are no bugs with it, or Facebook decides the existing design is better, it shouldn’t be too long before the company makes it available to the masses. But all we can do for now is wait.
